I met Janusz sometime in 1979, shortly after his arrival to the FDA. Already, at our first contact we discovered that we share many common scientific and personal interests. We both evolved in a comparable background, Janusz in Warsaw, Poland, and myself in Zagreb, Yugoslavia. In our very early teens we both lived through the horrors of the second word war. After completing our education, both of us accomplished nearly a “full time” career at a number of European Institutions, and afterwards started a new one in this country. During our tenure at FDA, we maintained frequent contacts, discussions, and exchanged ideas about topics of common interest. The real breakthrough in our collaboration happened when Janusz’s vision of creating a FDA Human Facility took shape. We spent a lot of time in exploring the best approach to realize this objective. Early in this planning we agreed that such a proposal would be much stronger if two, or more, FDA Centers would support it. Accordingly, I submitted a study from the FDA Center for Food Safety and Nutrition to be conducted at the Human Facility, which was renamed the FDA Photosciences Facility. While working in the Facility, I had plenty of opportunity to work closely with Janusz. Janusz, besides being an outstanding scientist, was also an exceptional personality, a good friend, and was loved by all colleagues and collaborators all around the globe. I remember many of our conversations, with the aid of a (or more) cup(s) of tea (I never saw Janusz drinking coffee), which included wide areas of science, history, music, and related. Janusz had also an exceptional talent to positively interact with individuals in his environment. Therefore, he was highly respected. I never heard any negative statement about him. Janusz, I will miss you. I regard you and Zofia as a member of my family. As I can not find the proper words, I will wish you a farewell through the aria from the Goldberg Variation, by J. S. Bach. I know, you would love it.
