A Kind Man

As we were always in different divisions and in separate buidings during the years we shared in FDA, I did not have many contacts with Dr. Beer. But there was one incident that I believe illustrates clearly the kind of man that he was. One day in the late 1970's or early 1980's a refugee scientist from Eastern Europe unexpectedly literally walked in off the street to the BRH Front Office in the Twinbrook Complex. His purpose was to inquire if the Bureau had any positions he might apply for or if he could be given any leads to possible employment in other agencies. I was working in a small Intergovernment Relations group in Chapman at the time and responsibility for trying to help the unexpected visitor was eventually transferred down to me. I was pretty much at a loss as to how to help him as most of our work was with the States but someone suggested that I Dr. Beer might be able to help in view of his background. With some trepidation, I called Dr. Beer to see if he might see us. At the time, I had only met him once and wasn't certain if he would even remember me and anyway it was pretty presumptious to ask someone to drop their work on a few minutes notice to help a complete stranger. Dr. Beer's close friends will not be surprised, however, to learn that he could not have been more gracious and helpful. He spent nearly an hour with us and provided much useful advice and the contact information for several people in other agencies. The refugee scientist left well satisfied and I left with a lasting respect for Dr. Beer as a person as well as a scientist. Roger Burkhart
