I am so sorry to learn of your father's death. Even though long times would go between our meetings, we always had good times together, whatever the problems of the day, and I respected him tremendously. I always considered him one of by close friends. Janusz and I first met at the 2nd ICRR in Harrowgate England (1961). Ever since then we had kept in contact and I visited him whenever I came to Poland. One standing request that he had was to bring in some part or another for his VW beetle so he could keep it going. I am sure that he had completely rebuilt it, replacing every part as it wore out. A major reason for his coming to the states was that the Moczar gov't in Poland had launched an anti-Semitic campaign to fire all people of Jewish origin from all university, technical institute and cultural positions to make vacancies for the "young men" (40-something group) in the better jobs in Poland. (For historical reasons, the postwar Lublin gov't administration and Polish Red Army had a larger Jewish composition than the population at large). Janusz was offered the Directorship of his Institute, but he knew that the new job would entail firing Jewish co-workers. He declined the promotion and made arrangements to leave for the USA. You may not be aware of it, but when Chernobyl went up, your father was the US point man to determine the seriousness of the problem and what counter measures the US should take to protect our citizens. This was partly due to his position at FDA, but also because he was the only person with both the necessary knowledge and the linguistic skills to communicate with everyone in all of the sites that might be affected by the early spread of radioactivity. He called the Polish monitoring stations near the Ukraine and asked them directly, "Have you seen anything different on your radioactivity monitors" (Geiger counters")? They replied "Yes, they were jumping around a lot so we thought that something is wrong with them but they were still erratic after we kicked them a few times." Janusz told them what had happened and asked them to keep detailed records and forward them to him as well as their authorities. He called similar sites in Sweden, Norway, Belarus, Finland, and the other surrounding countries to get weather reports (and wind directions) and any readings that they might have. This all went into his report to FDA and the US authorities planning what protective actions might be necessary in the USA (Iodine tablets, milk disposal, etc). As it turned out, no actions were necessary here, but it was his information that provided the data on which that decision was made.
