From 2002 through 2008, I was fortunate enough to serve as Director of the Office of Science and Engineering Laboratories (formerly the Office of Science and Technology) and in that role had a chance to closely observe Janusz Beer and his outstanding work. Janusz was not only respected by colleagues, he was also loved by many. They saw him as a leading light, someone who had a deep passion for science, and understood its importance in the quest to improve human health. He embodied the highest of ideals. He was someone to admire. He left a lasting impression on the FDA Center for Devices and Radiological Health, and on his scientific field. We are better off on this planet for his presence; we miss him greatly.
